Ceramic Artist Seyma Ates working in her private studio in Istanbul

About the Ceramic Artist Seyma Ates

I am Seyma Ates, a ceramic artist based in Istanbul. My journey with clay began in 2009 during my fine arts education, and in 2021, I established my private studio. I focus on intentional, wheelthrown, and handbuilt artistry—firing each piece at high temperatures between 2190°F–2340°F. No mass production, no shortcuts. Just clay, the wheel, my hands, and years of dedication.

The Journey of Ceramic Artist Seyma Ates

My relationship with clay began the same way most great loves do — through play. As a child, I was deeply captivated by play dough, shaping and reshaping it for hours. That same feeling never left me.

What started in 2009 as a formal education in ceramics became a calling. Touching raw clay and shaping it by hand is one of the most satisfying feelings I know. There is something ancient about it — a craft that has been passed down for thousands of years, and every time I sit at the wheel, I feel part of that long story.

Inspired by the Infinite: The Celestial Collection

That sense of connection is at the heart of my Celestial Collection. The moon and stars have always found their way into my sketchbooks — flowing naturally from my pen before I even realize it.

To me, they are symbolic of something universal. For thousands of years, people across every culture have looked up at the same sky. We still do. That shared gaze moves me deeply — and naturally, it found its way onto my ceramic mugs and stoneware pieces.
